Many times we may use our laptops or other items such as smart phones in an unsecured area such as an airport, coffee house or restaurant. This is typically done with a WiFi connection. However, someone that is savvy enough can access your private files if they know what they are doing and you don’t take the necessary precautions. There are a few ways you can help ensure you’re safer when not at home.
One way to help out is to use a firewall when you are in a public area to protect your privacy and if you are using an automatic firewall then all the better because there’s nothing special you have to do to start it up.
Hide your files from others by making sure whatever WiFi you are using has encryption and others can’t see your files publicly. If they do not encrypt then you might not want to use their service even if it’s free.
Don’t type in sensitive information such as credit card numbers or banking information because others that are smart enough can find their way around simple encryption methods and access what you have entered. If you have to do banking or use a credit card don’t wait till you’re at the airport to do it.
Most of these ideas are common sense items but many may not be aware of them. If you want to play it safe then follow these guidelines to ensure that someone isn’t checking out your private information to use against you. This means that someone can steal your banking information, use your credit card numbers or find out anything you might not want public. Always be aware of your surroundings too. Even if you have followed all of these rules, make sure someone isn’t looking over your shoulder. Keep in mind though, that thieves that can hack into your system don’t even need to be in your general vicinity to steal your information.
